Brenneke Bunny    Submitted by Tony Gillahan, Victoria

The next day I had to go back to school, so what better way to end the weekend than with Sunday night spotlighting. My brother Stuart and I decided to focus on a gully that was full of bunnies, so in hand I had an old Mossberg bolt action 12 gauge, that my Dad’s great grandfather had given him years and years ago.

Stuart drove into the paddock while scanning the gully with the spotlight, I walked along beside the car with my hand ready to close the bolt for some fast action. The first few rabbits flopped after getting a good dose of #3’s, but the 3’s soon ran out and I was left #8’s and a Brenneke 1oz deer slug. The #8’s accounted for a few more rabbits that were at close range, because the last thing I wanted was wounded rabbits on the loose. Once all the #8’s were gone I was left with the Brenneke slug, this was passed down to Dad along with the shotgun so it was quite old. Stuart found a bunny in the spotlight and I made chase, the confused rabbit stopped in a patch of bracken, allowing me to sneak up and whack him with the Brenneke from a metre away. It sure did leave a big hole! We had a laugh and a quick photo shoot with all the bunnies, all up I accounted for eight rabbits. We saw about thirty more, which will be .220swift targets next weekend. All in all a good nights fun for an hour spotlighting.

Thanks for the story Tony, great to see young blokes getting out there!  Cheers Jayson
